Arabica

Did you know that there are about 60 types of coffee in the world? However, only two are good for consumption. These unique strains come from the arabica and Robusta plant. Today we will tell you more about that first plant: the Arabica.

Arabica and Robusta are both very popular coffees, yet Arabica wins in terms of popularity and is known as coffee of the highest quality. The current coffee market consists of 70% to 80% percent Arabica and 20% to 30% Robusta.

Living conditions

The Arabica plant has its roots in Ethiopia, but it’s mainly produced in Brazil. It is not likely to be found in your garden unless you live at an altitude of 1500 up to 2000 meters, in which case it is a different story. This plant grows to an extreme height. The reason for this is self-protection. By growing at extreme heights, this plant is less exposed to parasites.

Amount of Caffeine

Did you know that the Arabica contains less caffeine than the Robusta? And this is for a reason. A coffee plant makes caffeine to protect itself from diseases and parasites. Since the Arabica plant grows at extreme altitudes and has less to do with this, the plant, therefore, contains less caffeine.

Arabica versus robusta

Like we said before, the Arabica plant contains less caffeine than the robusta coffee plant. This also creates a big difference in taste. In addition, the appearance of these two coffee beans also differs. The arabica bean is larger in size and has a different shape. The color of this bean is often light green, gray and sometimes even a bit blue, while the robusta bean is darker and more yellow.
