Boiler

A boiler system is the most common system in espresso machines used to heat water. In this article, we will discuss the use and other things there are to know.

What is a boiler?

A large proportion of professional espresso machines use the boiler as the heating method. This system can also be equipped with a heat exchanger. Without a heat exchanger, it is not possible to make espresso and froth milk at the same time. This is because both operations require a different temperature and use the same boiler. This heat exchanger can be used to make espresso as well as froth milk in a short time.

How does it work?

The temperature in the boiler is regulated by thermostats or pressure switches. The water level is regulated by a pump in the case of a semi-automatic machine, or manually in the case of a lever machine. In many cases, the machine is equipped with a manometer that indicates the pressure in the boiler. This is usually around 1.1 to 1.5 bar. The water in the system is heated by means of an electronic heating element. Cheaper boilers are often made of stainless steel, more expensive machines use aluminum or brass and the premium machines use high-quality copper. Machines with a heat exchanger often use copper.
