The history of cappuccino

The origin of cappuccino comes from Vienna, the capital of Austria. Although in the 20e century the modern version was discovered in Italy. At that time, Viennese coffeehouses already served a similar beverage but with a different name: Kapuziner Kaffee. The ingredients of the cappuccino were slightly different at that time. For example, they added some eggs and herbs. In Italy, they did it differently because of the invention of the espresso machine. They made it possible to combine espresso and cream by using the machine. Therefore, a lot of people refer to Italy when they are talking about the ‘real’ one.

The meaning of the name

The name ‘cappuccino’ was also invented in Italy. Legends say it has something to do with the Capuchin friars. What exactly, was never clarified. Some say it was because of the color of the robe. It’s similar to the color of a cappuccino. In Italy, ‘cappuccio’ means ‘hood/cap’ and ‘ino’ is diminutive so therefore, ‘cappuccino’ means ‘small cap/ small hood’.

For a long time, the proportions for a perfect cappuccino, where 1/3 espresso, 1/3 steamed milk and 1/3 milk foam. But these days that isn’t the case everywhere. One of the reasons is the fact that our cappuccinos are served in a bigger mug. So the most important rule is that you enjoy your version the most!
